Problem:

Solution:

AOL - Player reports "file not found."

Minimize your AOL browser and launch Netscape or Internet Explorer independently.

Shockwave for Mac - difficulty upgrading to new version (Symptoms are a blank search window or a message indicating an upgrade is required)

If you cannot get the installer to work, try the following:

1. Delete all Shockwave preference files. (Look in System Folder:Preferences)

2. Locate the Macromedia folder in Extensions (System Folder:Extensions) and either delete it, or move it to the desktop.

3. Run the installer again.

(NOTE: Shockwave must connect to the Internet to complete its installation process. Also, to install for more than one browser on the same computer, delete the preferences file before running a second installation.)

Internet Explorer for Mac - browser keeps crashing; purchase pages don't work correctly

This is a problem with Internet Explorer 5.0 and Shockwave. To correct this, upgrade to IE 5.1 or use a different browser.

Making purchase - nothing happens when Order button is clicked

Once the Order button is clicked, you are directed to Sound Effect's Library's SSL server - a process which ensures that sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, are not intercepted. This can take as long as 30 seconds - be patient and avoid clicking other buttons while this is happening.

If your computer is behind a firewall, your network administrator may need to open it up to SSL traffic.

Sounds are inaudible when auditioning.

Mac - Your browser does not have enough memory allocated to it. Shockwave normally requires at least 18 MB of RAM. To fix this, quit your browser, select the browser's application icon, select Get Info from the File menu in Finder, and increase its memory allocation. (The procedure for this depends on what version of the Mac OS you are running. See Mac Help or your computer's manual for more info.)

Windows - Your sound hardware may be in use by another program or is running low on memory. Quit all other open programs.

The downloaded sounds won't open.

The downloaded files are compressed, and Stuffit Expander or Winzip are required to decompress them. (The compression does not affect sound quality in any way, as it is not real-time compression.)

Note also that your browser's Preferences settings will affect where on your hard disk the files are saved, and what (if any) programs they are opened with. If you cannot find your sounds after they are downloaded, or if your browser attempts to open them with an incompatible program, check your browser's Preferences settings.
